About this ingredient
PH-40 is the standard workhorse for clear aqueous formulations that need to carry an oil phase — micellar waters, clear toners, room sprays, mouthwashes and clear shampoos. It is non-ionic, so it does not interfere with cationic or anionic systems. The usual guide is roughly three to five parts solubiliser per part of oil, adjusted by trial since fragrance oils vary widely.
Benefits
- Produces genuinely clear solutions with oils and fragrance
- Non-ionic — compatible with cationic and anionic systems
- Mild, with low irritation potential at typical use levels
- Available in both cosmetic and pharma grades
Applications
- Clear toners, micellar waters and facial mists
- Clear shampoos and body washes
- Fragrance and essential oil solubilisation
- Mouthwash and oral care
- Topical pharmaceutical solutions
Documentation
- Technical Data Sheet (TDS)Request
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS)Request
- Certificate of Analysis (COA)Download PDF
The COA is generated from our current product data and reports conformance against the standard specification — a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis carrying the measured values, batch number and dates is issued with each consignment. TDS and SDS are shared on request. More on how we document.
About PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (PH-40)
Frequently asked
Not covered here? Send the question with your enquiry and we will answer it directly.
01 How much PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil do I need for my fragrance?
A common starting point is three to five parts solubiliser to one part oil, then adjust by trial. Fragrance oils differ considerably in how easily they solubilise, so the working ratio has to be confirmed in your own system.
02 What is the CAS number of PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil?
The CAS number is 61788-85-0 and the INCI name is PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil. It is also traded as PH-40 and HCO-40.
03 What is the difference between PEG-40 and PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil?
The number indicates the degree of ethoxylation. PEG-60 is more hydrophilic and often preferred for surfactant systems, while PEG-40 is the more common general-purpose solubiliser for clear aqueous formulations. Both are available on enquiry.
